Every season, Weekend Max Mara introduces a ground-breaking capsule collection conceptualized with a distinct theme in collaboration with a prominent artist or designer.
This spring, Weekend Max Mara introduces its latest signature capsule called “Flutterflies”. Developed in collaboration with prominent illustrator and pop artist Donald Robertson, Flutterflies taps into Weekend Max Mara’s colourful side and incorporates bold tones, playful prints, and bright renditions of Weekend Max Mara’s butterfly logo.
As we transition from winter to spring, the world around us slowly becomes more colourful. Flowers bloom, sunshine beams, and new life blossoms. With a new season beginning, a refreshed wardrobe of vibrant statement pieces is a must. This spring, Weekend Max Mara welcomes fashion lovers around the world to enjoy its vibrant signature capsule called Flutterflies.
The collection is unlike anything Weekend Max Mara has designed. Flutterflies provides a unique take on signature styles and takes the brand’s beloved butterfly symbol and reimagines it using bright colours, brush strokes, sketches and patterns. Flutterflies was developed as a collaboration with pop art darling Donald Robertson.
Canadian artist Donald Robertson has made waves in the world of art, beauty, and fashion. Robertson studied art before becoming a beauty and publishing power player. He made his name as a creative director with the launch of MAC Cosmetics. During his time at Hearst Communications, he launched Marie Claire Magazine and redesigned Cosmopolitan. In 2007, Robertson was named creative director for Estee Lauder Companies. Despite all of his corporate success, he never abandoned his first love: drawing. When his assistant set up an Instagram account as a place for Robertson’s whimsical original works, he became a pop-art sensation.
Throughout his career, Robertson has worked with the world’s most prolific designers and retailers. Today, he is best known around the world as an illustrator and pop artist. Although his signature style draws parallels with the iconic Andy Warhol, Robertson’s art is very much his own.
The collaboration between Weekend Max Mara and Robertson began through a virtual studio tour when Robertson’s shelves full of colorful Gaffer tape and butterflies caught the eyes of Weekend Max Mara. Having never worked on butterfly designs before, Robertson expressed that the collaboration was meant to be.
“Strangely I never do butterflies. Never. I had just started playing around with the idea of hand-cut butterflies made out of heavy industrial Gaffer tape. In crazy colors. It’s like I knew they were going to call.”
Robertson injects his fun-loving creativity into the new Weekend Max Mara signature capsule collection. Using his witty, vivid, and cartoonish compositions, Robertson’s vibrant palette and lively prints bring a jolt of energy to spring.
The collection is encapsulated by key design elements including Weekend Max Mara’s reinterpreted butterfly logo, the use of bold colours, and playful patterns including Robertson’s signature Gaffer tape designs and handwritten print.
Each element comes together to create a fresh take on Weekend Max Mara’s spring garments.
Fans of Weekend Max Mara will undoubtedly be familiar with the iconic butterfly symbol. In Flutterflies, the logo is reinterpreted and seen fluttering throughout the collection in vivid prints and hand-cut coloured Gaffer tape. These subtle notes of playful creativity evoke what a child would make in art class, “It’s all very fun! Easy breezy. Or tongue-in-chic as I call it,” says Robertson.
Shop this season’s most vibrant palette of purple, green, blue, and red tones to re-energize just in time for sunny spring weather.
The Flutterflies collection was designed for women who love colour and offers the perfect break from playing it safe with a bright palette of purples, greens, blues, and reds. Dare to be bold and incorporate a pop of colour and some pop-art into your wardrobe with Robertson and Weekend Max Mara’s exuberant designs.
While colours make a statement, prints rule the Flutterflies collection.
Using Gaffer tape, Robertson creates clean, crisp lines and stripes that help define the feel-good selection of colourful motifs.
When combined with a vibrant palette, print and colour work together to mirror Robertson’s emblems, techniques, and vision, resulting in standout skirts, dresses, blouses, and more.
Contrasts of black and white are used to make prints and patterns turn heads. A perfect example is Robertson’s handwritten print styled with bright graphic tees.
